Croatian Ambassador Vesela Mrden Korac says Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit to her country this week is recognition of its efforts to "intensify" its dialogue with Canada over the past four years. "We enjoyed very strong support from Canada for our NATO membership," the ambassador said. "And also, there was a big decision on the visa regime last year after the screening of our democratic and demographic indicators. And, we've been developing our partnership bilaterally and Croatia is ready to become Canada's partner in southeastern Europe -- to become an economic and strategic partner in that part of the world."

Croatia: Never Stand Still

Croatians have found a new thirst for the present, without forgetting their past

By ALICE LAWLOR

Croatians don’t do small talk. Smile, attempt a “dobar dan” (“good day”) and you’ll get a conspiratorial grin in return. Ask how they are and you might be treated to a droll “srednja žalost” — translation: “moderate misery.” Their dry sense of humour — a consequence, perhaps, of living through more invasions than anyone cares to remember — is just the start

Minister Cannon Marks Anniversary of Croatia’s Independence

(January 15, 2010)

The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the anniversary of the international recognition of Croatia:

“I am pleased to mark the 18th anniversary of the international recognition of Croatia. On January 15, 1992, Canada joined the EU and other countries in recognizing Croatia as an independent country.

“Croatia, having emerged from the terrible conflicts of the 1990s, has shown impressive progress on its path to full Euro-Atlantic integration. Canada strongly supported Croatia’s NATO membership in 2009.

“Canada and Croatia enjoy very strong relations, built on shared values of democracy, the rule of law, and freedom and security. The Government of Canada lifted visa restrictions on Croatian nationals in 2009, and the intense exchange of high-level visits since 2006 has enabled solid and sustainable partnership between the two nations.”

CANADIAN VISA REQUIREMENTS TO VISIT CROATIA LIFTED

The Embassy of the Republic of Croatia wholeheartedly welcomes the milestone decision made by the Government of Canada to lift Visa Requirements for all Croatian citizens wishing to visit Canada.

This decision will facilitate the people-to-people relations between Croatia and Canada, accelerate business cooperation and strengthen the overall excellent Croatia-Canada relations.

This decision will additionally fortify the ties of the 110.000 members of Croatian-Canadian community with their family members, business partners and compatriots in Croatia.

The Embassy of the Republic of Croatia highly appreciates open and intensive cooperation with the Government of Canada resulting in many positive steps and some crucial decisions, including visa regime. Canadian Government abolished additional visa requirement known as military questionnaire in February 2008; Croatia was included on Visiting Forces Act list that enabled members of the Croatian military to enter Canada without visa when coming on NATO training programs, in January 2009.  With this new decision on lifting visa for all Croatian citizens, Canadian Government has formally shown recognition to all of the reforms and efforts of Croatian Government, Croatian diplomacy and positive contribution and role of Croatian Community in Canada.

Re: Croatia's Ghosts Stalk The Balkans Still, Julia Gorin, Jan. 29.

I would like to express our strong protest to the National Post about this column.
The text is insulting to the sovereign state of the Republic of Croatia, its entire nation and certainly to the great number of Croatians who have found a new home in Canada building bridges and friendly ties between our two countries and our two nations.
Such an intentional projection of a negative image of the other nation is in contradiction to the main principles of international relations based on equal sovereign rights for each country and promotion of the practice of tolerance and friendly relations among all nations. Canadian society has always had a leading role in promoting and living such a principle, being an example to the new democracies, such as Croatia...
